Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.” (John 4:13-18 NKJV)
After Jesus tells this woman about the water that He gives, she’s immediately interested. She’s like “Give me some!’ But look at how Jesus responds, ‘Go, call your husband, and come here.’ They weren’t discussing relationships, so why say that? It’s because He was letting her know what was preventing her from receiving and it was her boo and the same may be true for you.
Some of you have been submitting numerous prayer requests and asking the Lord to change things. But like the woman at the well, your prayers have been hindered because that man - who is not your husband – keeps getting in your way. God wants to bless you; but you keep asking Him to change that man. Or you keep justifying the sex because one day he’ll put a ring on it; or even worse, he already has and you’re just waiting the customary seven to nine year engagement period. Somewhere along the way, you believe that y’all are already married; just not on paper. And depending upon your state, you may even be considered his common-law wife. But in the eyes of God, he is not your husband.
Jesus changed the direction of the conversation to get this woman to see what was standing in the way of her receiving ‘the water’. She finally saw that she wasn’t a wife.
Pray this with me: Heavenly Father, please forgive me.I’ve been with this man so long that I’ve ignored the fact that we're not married. Because I’ve lived as his wife, I’ve excused the fact that I’m not.I’ve built my life around him but I know You want better.I’m not saying he’s a bad man Lord, but I want my husband and if he’s not it, then Lord help me to let go. In Jesus’ name.
